Why Websites Are Like Online Business Cards
In this day and age, technology takes center stage in every aspect of consumer's lives. We use search engines to find information about literally everything. Websites, like business cards are the calling cards that attract consumers to companies. The Internet allows individuals and business to advertise their skills and services to a much broader audience in a very creative way. Business card websites have taken two avenues, one more recent than the other. Websites themselves are used to advertise business to a broad audience. Various sites have also become, literally, virtual cards for people to advertise themselves.
Websites themselves provide the best exposure for any business because all a consumer has to do is type a keyword into a search engine. The Internet allow business to reach a very broad audience that results in the growth of the business. In today's society, we want information instantly. Say you are planning a night out with friends and you want to try a new restaurant. To find something that suits everyone's taste, you might search 'American Cuisine' in your area. The search results act as virtual cards, in that, you make a decision based on how businesses sell themselves to you through their website. Almost every business site has a 'contact us' tab that provides information the consumer would normally find on a paper business card. One thing a website offers in the way of advertisement a paper business card can not offer is tangible information about the company. A paper business card provides a name and contact information but it does not tell you what services the company offers. A website can provide consumers information about the company in a creative and attractive manner that draws in an audience.
These attributes translate into the most recent realm of personal advertisement; the literal online business card. In the age of going green, many people have turned to the Internet to advertise themselves. People are using social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Blogspot and others to advertise their talents, strengths, and careers. A new, "green", phenomenon that can fall under the social networking umbrella is the newest thing in the business world. According to mashable.com, people are using text messaging, mobile web, email, iPhone, LinkedIn, Google profile, and twitter to connect to one another in the business world. These technological advancements allow people to find information about one another that goes beyond the typical paper card. People not only know each others names and contact information but they also know each others hobbies, likes, dislikes, and even gain insight into ones creative talents. Virtual cards for business are also wallet friendly. Many of these methods are free and users can update information instantly. Paper business cards cost and when a phone number or email address changes, you have lost contact with many people.
The move to online cards is possibly the move of the century. Social networking exploded over the past decade; who's to say online business cards won't do the same?
